Every leader doubts himself. Sure, we're programmed not to let on when we are in doubting mode but the leaders I know have plenty of doubts.
They doubt whether or not they have what it takes to succeed at a higher level.
They doubt whether or not they have enough courage to tackle the tough problems at work.
They doubt whether or not they can outlast the naysayers.
And on and on.
Scott Eblin, author of The Next Level: What Insiders Know About Executive Success has this to say about the period of time when you are feeling doubtful: "The goal is to get through that period as quickly as possible so you can confidently do what you’re expected to do."
